Teri Guimond, aka “Bio Woman”, is on a mission to help health care staff segregate and celebrate how they manage biomedical waste! With over 15 years of experience working in the waste industry prior to joining Business Initiatives and Support Services in 2012, Teri has worked as the Hazardous Waste Coordinator training staff, supporting regulatory compliance, disposal policies and procedures for all four lower mainland health organizations. In recognition of her work in waste management, Teri is now a permanent presenter at the monthly Fraser Health New Employee Orientation. Teri has also recently developed an online Waste Management course for Vancouver Coastal Health’s new staff orientation required learning list. Teri’s passion for all things waste is only exceeded by her energy and enthusiasm… her engaging style will have you looking at your biomedical, garbage and recycling containers from a whole new perspective!

Jim Gauthier has over 27 years of infection prevention and control experience and speaks widely on infection control topics. Jim is a medical laboratory technologist by training, and truly loves his bugs!
Monica Herrera MHA, CDMP
Clinical Duty To Accommodate Advisor DisAbility Programs, Workplace Health, Fraser Health
Monica has been facilitating health promotion, recovery, and return at work for over 20 years. After working with oil and health care companies in Occupational Health, she joined Fraser Health Authority in 2004 as part of the disability management team. She is currently the Clinical Leader for the program. Monica brings her clinical and occupational health background to improving success in accommodation processes, and facilitating people with chronic conditions to stay at work. Among those conditions, preventing skin problems has been a very rewarding initiative that started in 2011. Use of management plans and a course in hand care available to employees in all Health Authorities in BC are her most recent works.

Monika Naus MD, MHSc., FRCPC
Medical Director, Immunization Programs and Vaccine Preventable Diseases Service at BC Centre for Disease Control
Dr. Monika Naus is a public health physician with a career focus in communicable disease control and immunization. She has been with the BC Centre for Disease Control since 2001, and is the Medical Director of the Immunization Programs and Vaccine Preventable Diseases Service. She is also an Associate Professor at the School of Population and Public Health at the University of British Columbia. Prior coming to BC, she worked at the Public Health Branch at the Ontario Ministry of Health in communicable disease prevention roles. She is involved in a variety of provincial and national activities to improve immunization programs in Canada. She was a member of the National Advisory Committee on Immunization for 12 years including its chairwoman for 4 years. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Public Health and Preventive Medicine and of American College of Preventive Medicine.
Sabina Nawaz

Emily is a Human Factors Specialist with Quality & Patient Safety at Vancouver Coastal Health. She is passionate about the implementation of safe technology, systems and processes within healthcare, working across disciplines and the healthcare continuum to deliver safer care. Emily completed her Bachelors of Applied Science in Engineering Science with a focus in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Toronto. She received her Master of Health Science from the University of Toronto in Clinical Engineering conducting her thesis research on medication administration safety and human error. She completed internships with the Healthcare Human Factors group at the University Health Network and in the Department of Anesthesia at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. In addition to her engineering and human factors training, Emily also holds a Master of Public Health from the University of British Columbia
Katy Short
Epidemiologist, Fraser Health
Katy received her MPH from the University of British Columbia. She is currently an epidemiologist with Fraser Health Infection Prevention and Control program. Previously, she worked for the Government of Nunavut providing epidemiological analysis for chronic and communicable diseases.
Jocelyn Srigley MD, MSc, FRCPC
Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine;

Dr. Srigley has been interested in infections ever since seeing the movie Outbreak. She trained in Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases, and Medical Microbiology at McMaster University and subsequently completed a clinical fellowship in infection prevention and control and a Master of Science in health services research at University of Toronto. She is currently the director of infection prevention and control for the Provincial Health Services Authority and a medical microbiologist at BC Children’s & Women’s Hospitals.
Jason Tetro
Visiting Scientist, University of Guelph
Jason Tetro has researched health-related microbiology and immunology for over 25 years. He has worked in various fields including bloodborne, food and water pathogens; environmental microbiology; disinfection and antisepsis; and emerging pathogens such as Zika virus. In the public, he is better known as The Germ Guy. He regularly writes for The Huffington Post Canada, and regularly appears on CBC Radio and SirusXM. He has written two books, The Germ Code, which was shortlisted as Science Book of The Year (2014) and The Germ Files, which spent several weeks on the national bestseller list. He has also co-edited The Human Microbiome Handbook, which provides an academic perspective on the impact of microbes in human health.
Duncan Steele MA, PMP, MHA(c)
Ethicist, System-Level Ethics, Fraser Health Authority
Duncan Steele is System-Level Ethicist, Fraser Health Ethics Services. He specializes in organizational/system-level ethics and ethics education. His role with system-level policy consultations involves leading inter-professional teams, usually from a clinical setting, in working towards rigorous, well-justified guidelines, protocols, and policies. Duncan completed his Masters in Health Administration at UBC and holds a Masters in Applied Ethics at Utrecht University and Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of British Columbia.
Titus Wong BSc, MD, MHSc, FRCPC
Clinical Assistant Professor, Medical Microbiologist, Infection Control Physician; Medical Lead, Infection Control, Vancouver Coastal Health
Titus Wong was born and raised in Vancouver, BC. He completed his MD and Medical Microbiology residency at the University of British Columbia, and earned a Masters in Health Science (Clinical Epidemiology) from the UBC School of Population and Public Health. He joined the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Vancouver General Hospital in 2012. Titus currently practices as a Medical Microbiologist and Infection Control Physician and is the Medical Lead for Infection Prevention and Control for Coastal, VCH. Titus has research interests in the testing and clinical application of environmental infection control strategies, and the clinical impact of rapid microbiology/infectious diseases diagnostic technologies. Titus contributes to several provincial and national groups including CMPT, CNISP, AMMI-Canada, PICNET, and Doctors of BC. Titus is also an active contributor to medical education at UBC: He lectures with the medical undergraduate program in addition to multiple residency and fellowship programs, supervises and mentors medical trainees of all stages in clinical practice and research, sits on the residency training committees of Medical Microbiology Residency and Infectious Diseases Fellowship programs, and is the course co-director (with Dr. Linda Hoang) of UBC Pathology 722, a course focused on teaching medical microbiology and infection control to residents and fellows.
